Dimensions 13.5 cm About Capiz shells: These are made from the outer shell of a marine mollusk, whose scientific name is placuna placenta, also known as the windowpane oyster. The Capiz shells from the Philippines are so named because they were originally harvested from the shallow coastal waters near the city of Capiz, on the island of Panay. Once cleaned, these shells are naturally translucent, and when painted, they produce a particularly beautiful play of colors when a light is placed inside.
